On the 18th June 2016, 27 of our swimmers competed in the annual Stevenage Sprint Open Meet. In what was a very competitive and enjoyable meet our swimmers finished the day with an excellent medal haul.
Competing in 120 events between them, they completed the day with 32 golds, 27 silvers and 9 bronzes. 55 personal bests were achieved and 17 races were competed in for the first time by certain swimmers.
Sam Safavi-Zadeh, 9, won gold in the 50m breaststroke (55.50) & the 100m breaststroke (1.58.59) achieving new PB’s at the same time. More PB’s were gained in the 50m backstroke (49.54) and 50m freestyle (44.25) where Sam picked up silver in both races. Competing for the first time he also saw second place in the 100m Individual Medley (1.51.47) and 100m freestyle (1.40.56).
Fresia Radzi-Goldsmith, 9, who was competing in her first open meet, saw her win silver in the 50m butterfly (1.07.13), she also finished 6th in the 50m breaststroke (1.15.26) and 5th in the 50m freestyle (54.24).
Her sister LyliaRadzi-Goldsmith, 11, who was also competing in her first open meet, finished 10th in the 50m butterfly (1.02.66), 9th in the 50m backstroke (55.74) and 12th in the 50m freestyle (45.24).
Emily Pickard, 9, won 2 silver medals in the 50m backstroke (48.30) and 100m Backstroke (1.45.98).
Finlay Jackson, 10, gained a new PB in the 50m backstroke (48.86) where he finished 6th. He then won medals when he finished 2nd in the 50m breaststroke (1.02.15) in a new PB and 3rd in the 50m freestyle (42.33).
Woody South, 10, won 5 golds this saw PB’s in the 100m breaststroke (1.42.28), 100m freestyle (1.21.01) and 100m individual medley (1.33.11). He was just outside his PB’s on the 50m breaststroke (47.87) and 50m freestyle (37.20).
Jake Evans, 10, gained new PB’s in the 50m butterfly where he finished 1st and 50m backstroke where he finished 3rd. He also won medals when he finished 3rd in the 100m individual medley (1.42.49) and 2nd in the 50m freestyle (37.92).
Indya Bowmaker, 10, saw big PB’s gained in the 50m freestyle (47.38) where she finished 12th and 50m breaststroke (55.79) where she finished 7th.
Victoria Townsend, 10, gained new PB’s in the 50m backstroke (52.33) and 50m freestyle (44.02) where she finished both races 10th overall.
Tara Safavi-Zadeh, 11, achieved a new PB in the 50m butterfly (47.88). She also finished 5th in the 100m breaststroke (1.49.93), 8th in the 100m individual medley (1.38.84), and 10th in the 50m breaststroke (42.82). Tara also competed in the 100m butterfly for the first time; she completed the race in an excellent time of 1.49.53, finishing 4th overall.
Evie Brown, 11, competed for the first time in the 100m individual medley (1.32.75) where she finished 4th. She then gained 2 PB’s in the 50m breaststroke (49.36) where she finished 6th and the 50m freestyle (38.33), finishing 8th.
Dayna Shepperson, 11, gained PB’s in the 50m butterfly (43.12) finishing 5th and 100m freestyle (1.15.11) finishing 4th. Further PB’s we achieved by winning bronze in the 50m freestyle (34.82), silver in the 50m breaststroke (46.05) and gold in the 50m backstroke, Dayna also won a second gold this time in the 100m backstroke (1.29.57).
Luis Fitzgerald, 12 won gold in the 100m butterfly (2.06.73) in what was the first time he had competed in the event, he also competed for the first time in the 100m (1.49.66) backstroke where he took silver. He then gained PB’s in the 50m Breaststroke (52.51) where he finished 4th & 50m freestyle (42.99) finishing 5th.
Alex Smith, 12, gain PB’s in the 100m freestyle where he finished 4th and 50m freestyle where he finished 7th. Alex also finished 6th in the 50m backstroke (56.27) and competing for the first time he also finished 6th in the 50m breaststroke (56.00).
Aaron Pickard, 11, achieved 3 new PB’s where he finished 2nd in both the 50m backstroke (43.37) and 100m Individual Medley (1.31.46). Aaron then won gold in the 50m freestyle (34.24).
Rosie Batt, 12, gained PB’s in all of her races where she finished 6th in the 50m butterfly (41.43), 5th in the 100m freestyle (1.15.91) and 8th in the 50m freestyle (35.95). Rosie also won bronze in the 100m butterfly (1.35.51).
Taylor Coe, 12, won gold while achieving a new PB in the 100m butterfly (1.36.37). The boys junior captain also gained PB’s in a further four events where he finished 4th in the 50m Backstroke (38.93), 100m individual Medley (1.25.24), 50m breaststroke (46.73) and 50m freestyle (33.04).
Millie Clarke, 12, the girls’ junior captain gained three new PB’s on the day. The first came in the 50m butterfly (35.62) and the second came in the 100m individual medley (1.22.96). Millie then won gold in the 50m breaststroke (42.70).
Anastasios Karameros, 13 achieved a new PB in the 50m butterfly (37.32) where he finished 2nd, he then won his second medal of the day when he took bronze in the 100m breaststroke (1.34.44). He was then 6th in the 100m freestyle (1.11.50), 5th in the 100m individual medley (1.29.70), 4th in the 50m breaststroke (44.43) and 5 in the 50m freestyle (34.80).
Chloe Berko-Boateng, 13, won 4 medals on the day taking gold in the 50m butterfly (32.16) and the 100m breaststroke (1.27.75). Chloe then won bronze in the 50m backstroke (37.03) and 100m freestyle (1.09.08).
Emily Lush, 13, started the day with a PB in the 50m butterfly (33.54) where she finished 4th. Emily then went on to win three golds in the 50m backstroke (34.22), 100m backstroke (1.15.52) and 50m freestyle (29.58), she also took home sliver by finishing 2nd in the 100m individual medley (1.17.70).
Zane Batt, 13, won 5 golds on the day the first of these was in the 50m backstroke (34.45) and 100m freestyle (1.06.84) where he gained new PBs, other golds were won in the 100m individual medley (1.18.18), 100m backstroke (1.15.35) and 50m freestyle (31.07). Zane won silver in the 100m butterfly (1.25.79) and gained 2 more PB’s when he finished 2nd in both the 50m (43.04)& 100m breaststroke (1.30.42), he gained his final PB in the 50m butterfly (37.60) where he finished 4th.
Courtney Burke, 14,achieved 2 PB’s on the day when she finished 1st in the 50m butterfly (33.38) and 2nd in the 100m freestyle (1.06.94). A further gold was won in the 50m breaststroke (40.15) and silver in the 100m individual medley (1.18.89). In her final race of the day Courtney finished 4 in the 50m freestyle (31.86).
Eleanor Turpin, 14, won silver in the 50m backstroke (1.16.19) and 5th in the 50m freestyle (32.16) where she was just outside her PB.
Megan Pope, 14, won 4 medals on the day. Gold was gained in the 100m breaststroke (1.28.97) and 100m individual medley (1.18.48). Megan also took home silver in the 50m freestyle (31.36) and bronze in the 100m freestyle (1.08.07)
Adam Bailey, 15, gained a new PB in the 50m butterfly (31.55) where he finished 7th. Adam also finished 4th in both the 50m backstroke (33.23) and 100m individual medley (1.18.14). In his final event of the day he finished 6th in the 50m freestyle (28.40).
Claire Massey, 31, took home gold in both the 50m backstroke (32.82) where she gained a new PB and 100m backstroke (1.13.04). Claire then won silver in the 50 butterfly (32.87).
Daniel Lush, 15, the boys club captain gained PB’s when he won gold in the 50 backstroke (30.51) and silver in the 100m individual medley (1.05.26). Daniel triumphed again when he saw another gold in the 50m freestyle (25.55), silver in the 50m backstroke (1.06.86) and bronze in the in the 50m butterfly (28.88).
Coach Richard Walker said that he was proud of the swimmers achievements. “They all put a lot of hard work in to their training and that showed today with some excellent times and with the medals won. It was also good for some of the younger swimmers to compete with the more experienced ones; I hope that they have taken something from this meet that they can use in future competitions”.
