Cheshunt Swimmers dominate at the Regional Open Water Championships
Posted By : Cheshunt SC On 2014-08-17 01:08:00
Sunday saw the East Region Open Water Championships held at Wittlingham in Norfolk.
Three swimmers from Cheshunt SC entered. The first race was the 800m in which both Callum Wollaston & Holly Atkins were competing in their very first open water event. Callum went in the 1st Heat and started out very strongly leading the pack of 40 swimmers to the 1st marker. As they returned to the finish he touch just behind the 2 girls who were in the older age groups. By the time the results were all in Callum came away with a large haul of silverware finishing:
1st in the Region in the 13/14yr age group
1st in the County in the 13/14yr age group
1st in the County for the Junior (U16) age group
1st in the County for the open age group
In the next heat for the 800m was Holly Atkins. Again this was Holly’s 1st venture into open water swimming. At the start she got a little boxed in but as the swimmers spread out she soon found her rhythm and swam a strong race. Again once all of the results were in Holly found herself finishing:
13th in the Region in the 13/14yrs age group
1st in the County in the 13/14yr age group
3rd in the County for the Junior (U16) age group
3rd in the County for the open age group
Emily South was last years County Junior & Senior champion at 800m and stepped up to the 1500m this year. Her experience from the previous year meant that she got herself into a good position in the opening 200m which kept her out of any trouble. As she disappeared off into the distance she settled into a good pace in the middle of the pack. Emily finished strongly in the final stages and when the results were all in she achieved:
14th overall in the 13/14yrs age group
1st in the County in the 13/14yr age group
1st in the County for the Junior (U16) age group
Head coach Paul Wollaston said “ It was a fantastic result. We had two County Champions and a Regional Champion from our swimmers”.
